I was happy in my small town. In my life as a single, thirty-two year old woman. I had a good job, wonderful friends, my independence.

I also hadn’t been laid in three years. Hadn’t been on a date in two. Had stopped counting calories and wearing makeup… a while ago.

Then Brett Jacobs waltzed in. Caressed my thigh, dug rough fingers into my hair, lowered his soft mouth to my skin, took sexual control of my mind and stirred it all around with what he packed in his pants. He flipped my quiet life upside down and crawled into a place in my heart I thought was dead.

The issue is his secret.
The issue is her.
The issue is that I don’t even know she exists, and he thinks she’s dead.
The issue is that shit is about to hit the fan and I can’t hold on to him tight enough.

What would you do if you were torn away from your home and family, chosen by lottery to become a public symbol of the defeat of your people? To be put on display by the victor as a symbol of his power? To enter a world of service – of domination and submission – of pleasure and punishment?

And when she finds that the people who are holding her may not actually be the enemy, she realizes it might just be possible for her to find happiness in the midst of tragedy.

Should she fight her feelings, or choose to embrace them?

They’re always happy.

Rory James has worked hard all his life to become a citizen of the idyllic city-state of Beulah. Like every other kid born in the neighboring country of Tophet, he’s heard the stories: No crime or pollution. A house and food for everyone. It’s perfect, and Rory is finally getting a piece of it.

So is Tate Patterson. He’s from Tophet, too, but he’s not a legal immigrant; he snuck in as a thief. A city without crime seems like an easy score, until he crashes into Rory during a getaway and is arrested for assaulting a citizen. Instead of jail, Tate is enrolled in Beulah’s Rehabilitation through Restitution program. By living with and serving his victim for seven years, Tate will learn the human face of his crimes.

If it seems too good to be true, that’s because it is. Tate is fitted with a behavior-modifying chip that leaves him unable to disobey orders—any orders, no matter how dehumanizing. Worse, the chip prevents him from telling Rory, the one man in all of Beulah who might care about him, the truth: in a country without prisons, Tate is locked inside his own mind.

J.R. Ward – Lover Mine

Lover Mine by J.R. Ward

Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood #8
Source: Personal Library
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In the darkest corners of the night in Caldwell, New York, a conflict like no other rages. Long divided as a terrifying battleground for the vampires and their enemies, the city is home to a band of brothers born to defend their race: the warrior vampires of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was- or his true identity. Indeed, the fallen Brother Darius has returned, but with a different face and a very different destiny. As a vicious personal vendetta takes John into the heart of the war, he will need to call up on both who he is now and who he once was in order to face off against evil incarnate.

Xhex, a symphath assassin, has long steeled herself against the attraction between her and John Matthew. Having already lost one lover to madness, she will not allow the male of worth to fall prey to the darkness of her twisted life. When fate intervenes, however, the two discover that love, like destiny, is inevitable between soul mates.

My sweet John Matthew finally gets his own book – and the result was romance, heartbreak, action, suspense… and a dash destiny…

(Spoiler Free if you’ve read the previous books)

The essential truth of life, he was coming to realize, wasn’t romantic and took only two words to label: Shit. Happens.
But the thing was, you kept going. You kept your friends and your family and your mate as safe as you were able. And you kept fighting even after you were knocked down.

I have a tendency to become overly-attached to fictional characters; John Matthew is definitely in that category. I’ve watched him grow – literally and figuratively – over the course of this series, and while I was incredibly excited for him to get his own book, I was also nervous as hell… What was going to happen to John Matthew?

All I could do was sit back, let J.R. Ward take me on a wild ride, and cross my fingers that everything would turn out OK for a character I’ve come to adore.

“No, you’ve got it all wrong, John.” Reading his emotions, she shook her head. “You’re not half the male you could be because of what was done to you. You’re twice what anyone else is because you survived.”

My sweet (not so little any more) John… Readers of the BDB Series watched him grow up and struggle to overcome the tragic circumstances of his past… The lost, scrawny, scared orphan managed to secure a place in my heart and it’s been amazing to watch his story progress.

All of the characters seem destined to hit rock-bottom right before they’re given their own book. John was spiraling out of control in the wake of Tohr’s return to the Brotherhood, and the epic failure of the pseudo-relationship with Xhex. Even before John’s transition, he was helplessly enamored with the female head of security at ZeroSum… When Xhex was kidnapped by Lash at the end of Lover Avenged, John completely lost it.

There was no way to comfort the lost boy he’d been back then.
But she had the grown male.
She had him right in her arms, and for a brief moment of whimsy, she imagined that she was never, ever going to let him go.

I was worried about pairing John up with the infamous Sympath badass female known as Xhex… John had been through so much tragedy in his life, and Xhex didn’t seem to have nurturing bone in her body… Turns out, Xhex is a perfect match for John, and she proves her worth over the course of this book.

On a side note: We saw how lethal Xhex can be in Lover Avenged, but she really spread her wings in this book. The female is a fighter with skills that will make your jaw drop. She’s simply incredible. In a series which has become hit-or-miss with its female characters, I was hugely impressed with Xhex!

“You don’t go after what’s mine. Now be a good boy and gut yourself.”

The overall pacing of this book was AMAZING. J.R. Ward likes to weave multiple story-lines together, but never has that been as beautifully accomplished as in Lover Mine.

The side-stories and flashbacks coalesced in a way which was both seamless and satisfying.

John’s connection to Darius was explored through the pages of the Brother’s diary – and included insight into multiple characters of the series including Tohr and Wrath – as well as a few others which were a surprise right up until the reveal.

I miss you. I miss you so fucking bad it hurts, but I don’t know how to find you even though you’re right in front of me.

I ache for these two… Their story has been progressing over the last several books in the series and I am eager to see them find their Happily Ever After together… Honestly, I’m so invested in Blay & Qhuinn, that I’m not particularly interested in reading Lover Unleashed (Payne’s Story) – I just want to skip straight to Lover At Last… But I’m a good little girl, and I’ll read everything in order… Even if the anticipation is killing me…

J.R. Ward – Lover Avenged

Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward

Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood #7
Source: Personal Library
My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars

J. R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood novels have introduced readers to a “different, creative, dark, violent, and flat-out amazing” (All About Romance)world. Now, as the vampire warriors defend their race against their slayers, one male’s loyalty to the Brotherhood will be tested-and his dangerous mixed blood revealed…

Caldwell, New York, has long been the battleground for the vampires and their enemies, the Lessening Society. It’s also where Rehvenge has staked out his turf as a drug lord and owner of a notorious night club that caters to the rich and heavily armed. His shadowy reputation is exactly why he’s approached to kill Wrath, the Blind King and leader of the Brotherhood.

Rehvenge has always kept his distance from the Brotherhood-even though his sister is married to a member, for he harbors a deadly secret that could make him a huge liability in their war against the lessers. As plots within and outside of the Brotherhood threaten to reveal the truth about Rehvenge, he turns to the only source of light in his darkening world, Ehlena, a vampire untouched by the corruption that has its hold on him-and the only thing standing between him and eternal destruction.

Rehvenge’s Story brings back the hard-hitting action and suspense we’ve come to expect from this series!

…every once in a while, from out of the blue, someone reaches the quiet place where you spend your private time and changes the way you see yourself…

I’m cautiously optimistic… I feel like we’ve reached a turning point with this installment, and I sincerely hope the momentum continues with the subsequent books.

As usual, the stories surrounding all of the secondary and tertiary characters stole the show:

  • Beth and Wrath feature prominently in this book.
  • John Matthew has a giant role.
  • Doc Jane has several cameos.
  • There’s a shift in the Brotherhood.
  • Lassiter the Angel has some awesome dialogue.
  • The Scribe Virgin is moping around like an empty-nester.
  • Lash plays a great big part in this book, which I think will appease the readers who have been less than thrilled with the amount of pages taken up by the Lessers

But the Stars of this book were Rehvenge and Ehlena:

His glowing amethyst eyes saw everyone and cared about no one.
Rehv – or the Reverend, as the human clientele called him – was a drug lord and a pimp who didn’t give a shit about the vast majority of people. Which meant he was capable of, and frequently did, anything the fuck he wanted to.

Rehv is the infamous Zero-Sum club owner who has a larger than life personality which is only enhanced by his Sympath heritage… Talk about a hard-ass with a heart of gold…

“Must the world always be so harsh, I wonder,”

Ehlena is a nurse in Haver’s clinic – and what do you want to bet she was the nurse who helped Phury evacuate the patients in Lover Enshrined? I bet she was… Anyway, Ehlena is your quintessential care-giver who believes that every soul is worth saving… Plus, she winds up being a smart female with a spine of steel. I mean, the woman goes toe to toe with Xhex! :O

Unfortunately, the Romance portion of the plot between these two was firmly in the whole “I love her but I don’t deserve her” vs. “He’s dreamy but he’ll never love little ‘ol me” trope, which I loathe… Complete with some “I’ll push her away so I don’t break her heart” behavior. Not cool, J.R. Ward… Not cool..

Now for the more spoiler-y thoughts:

(Read at your own risk)

Wrath is now completely blind. I have to admit, it hurt my heart to know he wouldn’t be able to fight with this Brothers any more… I don’t think anybody wanted to see him lay down his daggers for good.

Also, you know I’m a dog lover… So I was stoked to meet Wrath’s Seeing Eye Dog, George… but that’s not nearly a bad-ass enough name. I think he should be Ghorge… You know how much the Brotherhood likes to throw an extra H into a name 😉

The scenes from inside the Sympath Colony were amazing… J.R. Ward really tapped into a cinematic quality with the visuals on that one. The cell which held Rehv, as well as the apparatus he was attached to… Not to mention the darkness and creepy-crawlies…

John Matthew has long been my favorite character of this series, but he needs to get his shit together. His little emotional roller-coaster throughout this book was exhausting… He’s had to go through so much shit in his life before his transition, and he seemed to be in such a good place… Then he found Tohr, had sex with the Symath of his dreams… And he just checked out, got drunk, and started driving me nuts.

I know J.R. Ward is a fan of making characters hit rock-bottom before she gives them their own book, but seriously… Get it together John!
