We’re reluctantly weighing in on this week’s Author/Blogger relations fiasco known as Black Balled – the new release from Andrea Smith. In this industry, Egos inflate quickly and somehow the entire blogging community got pulled into the gravitational pull of two people who don’t like each other, but who claim to represent their respective demographics.
Our official stand on this absurd Scandal:
We’re not fans of the blogger involved.
We don’t give a lot of fucks about the author either.
Neither party has endeared themselves through this whole feud.
On one side we have a blogger, Baba, who consistently writes HONEST reviews. Sometimes brutal, painful, scathing, reviews, but that’s her prerogative. All reviewers are giving their individual opinions based on subjective experiences and preferences. Here’s OUR honest opinion – We don’t dig Baba’s reviews, and her ratings consistently diverge from ours, So we don’t follow her. We don’t read her reviews, and that’s about it – If one particular author had enough sense to do the same, we wouldn’t even be writing this… But alas, we’re here to remind everyone that just because you don’t agree with someone doesn’t mean they’re not entitled to their opinion. Only an asshole would say something like that.
Long story short, Baba panned a couple of Andrea Smith‘s popular books (I mean, it was a little more complicated than that, but whatever) and the author decided it would be a good idea release a book called Black Balled and then pretend it’s not an obsessive commentary on a reviewer that didn’t like her…
I read the blurb for Black Balled and was appalled – the following image was a screen shot of the Blurb on GoodReads. It has since been updated to something less
Andrea Smith argues that her character Babu has nothing to do with Baba and that she loves all bloggers. She’s claims to be completely baffled as to why anyone would draw correlation between her ongoing feud with Baba and the release of Black Balled. I have never seen so much backpedaling in my entire life.
Truth is, everyone knows that Baba can be brutal with her criticisms. Most readers who enjoy her reviews aren’t dissuaded in the least from reading books she rates poorly. What readers didn’t know until this stunt is that Andrea Smith is churlish and petty at best, and phenomenally creepy and disrespectful of the blogging industry at worst.
This is not the first case of Author backlash, nor will it be the last. I really do appreciate authors identifying themselves loudly like this so I can make sure not to support them in the future. Makes my job easier.
Last year there was an uproar about Authors lashing out at bloggers for their unflattering reviews -It’s the risk you take when you offer an opinion on anything on the internet. That you’ll be sucked into a battle with pissy Trolls. But that’s not what concerns me the most. In 2014 an author tracked down a reviewer and showed up at her house. That is psychotic and terrifying.
Should we as a blogging community be less concerned with retaliatory authors like Andrea Smith because she chose to lash out in a non-violent way? Where do we draw the line?
In the case of the Black Balled fiasco, I suggest letting both sides stand upon the mountain of unflattering behavior they’ve built for themselves. Good luck climbing down from there.
Now, I’m done talking about this.
