Andrea Smith – These Men

These Men by Andrea Smith

Series: G-Man (Spin-off)
Source: Personal Library
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This novella is a spin-off from the G-Men Series and can be read as a stand-alone.

Paige Matthews has a lot to learn – about everything, including herself. At age twenty-two, Paige finds herself driving across the country to start an internship with the F.B.I. in Quantico, Virginia.

You would think that Paige would be grateful to her older brother, Trace Matthews, a senior F.B.I. agent who pulled strings on her behalf to get her into the program, right?

Paige is not overly enthused at the realization that her parents have pushed her from the nest and onto her older brother’s plate for the time being. Always a loner, she quickly wears out her welcome with Trace and his wife Lindsey, due to her . . . need for random hook-ups, and finds herself crashing with her oldest brother, Easton, and his wife Darcy.

Through Darcy, Paige is introduced to her sister-in-law’s former roommate and bestie male friend, Eli Chambers, along with his sinfully handsome partner, Cain Maddox. They’re looking for a roommate and Paige is looking to get out from underneath her family’s watchful eye.

This is no typical “Three’s Company” story though. Paige embarks on a journey of self-discovery that teaches her not only about giving, but about accepting love as well. She soon realizes that sometimes what you’re searching for has been right there with you all along.

I’m a total sucker for a well-crafted Menage story…

“A threesome is an event,” he replied. “I’m looking for much more than that, Paige.”

Modern Erotic Romance is a wide world full of diverse sub-genres. There is something for everyone! No matter your kink, there’s an author who can satisfy your needs.

Some readers flock to Billionaires, Cowboys, Vampires, or Rockstars… Some readers dig on Happily-ever-Afters, dirty-talk, abductions, BDSM, Motorcycle gangs…

I’ll stop now, but you get the idea…

As you may already know, I am a Professional Reader of Erotica. I have read every kink imaginable and I am often asked “What is your favorite kind of Erotica?” and the answer has been the same for years.

MMF Erotic Romance is my jam.

MMF Romance: That’s two bisexual males and one female.
One Relationship, three hearts, three minds, three souls, and yes… One bed.

(Find More MMF Romances I’ve reviewed by clicking here)

The sex is a huge draw for me (obviously) in these types of relationships, but it also brings out my favorite kind of angst and indecision.

Plus, it is a difficult scenario to write… and write well.
The reader has to LIKE all three of the parties involved.

If any of the three rub the reader the wrong way, we will immediately start hoping that the trio turns into a happy duo.

There are so many pieces of information which must come together to satisfy the reader’s desire to know that this (yes, I know it’s fictional) relationship, however uncommon, is built to last.

That’s a lot of suspension of disbelief. It is a hard enough thing to accomplish a believable love story between two parties…
But this is about THREE.
three personalities
three back-stories

…and Andrea Smith took on the monumental task of accomplishing it in 140 pages.

My hat is off to Andrea Smith… I’d love to see what she can do with a full length novel & the MMF theme… And by that I mean:

Dear Andrea Smith,
Please may I have some more?
– Shurrn

I read this book as part of the Bend Anthology which features some of the most talented authors currently working in Modern Romance.

Julia Sykes – Monster

Monster by Julia Sykes

Series: The Impossible Trilogy #1
Source: Personal Library
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My life was irrevocably changed that night.
The night I was taken.

I saved a man’s life, but at what cost to myself?
Can I convince him to save me in return?

I hate him for what he’s done to me. But the longer I’m trapped with him, the harder it is to cling to that hatred.
He is an enigma of a man, one who is shockingly arrogant, sweetly contrite, and frighteningly aggressive by turns.

And the pain in his eyes is a mirror for my own.

The longer I remain in his grip, the more confused I become.

Is my freedom worth betraying him?

Warning: This series contains strong language and scorching sex scenes involving light BDSM. This is a 42,000 word novella with a cliffhanger ending.

I was completely wrapped up in this twisted story, and read the whole thing in one sitting!

I saved the life of a man who wants to keep me locked away indefinitely. And now I was going to continue treating him. It seemed my desire to preserve human life was overriding my own sense of self-preservation.

I love a good abduction story, and Monster delivers. The writing is superb. It draws you in from the first lines and keeps you hooked. I loved it!

…when we touched, he ignited such a fire within me, one that made me forget my internal anguish, granting me release from the burden of the agony that had scarred my soul… I couldn’t resist the allure, couldn’t resist him.

Claudia is a pediatrician who had her carefully controlled life completely shattered the moment she was kidnapped at gunpoint in the hospital parking lot.

A man on the edge could be more dangerous than a cold-blooded criminal.

Bradley’s best friend is dying. Taking him to a hospital would result in a jail sentence, so he is forced to kidnap a doctor to heal his friend.

He was such an enigma: unbearably cocky, somewhat terrifying, and shockingly tender by turns.
And I couldn’t seem to resist him.

Sean woke up with a gunshot wound and a very pissed off woman handcuffed to his bed…

Now that it looks like Sean might survive his brush with death, Claudia’s medical expertise is no longer needed. Unfortunately, the criminals who abducted her can’t let her go free…

Let’s Break it down:

The entire story is told from Claudia’s POV, and she proves to be quite the badass. She has overcome enough obstacles in her life that she is not easily breakable…

Claudia has no family or close friends to pull a Liam Neeson and save her. She is completely on her own to figure out how to escape…

This is a FREE ebook on Amazon, and I recommend you go out and pick it up.

Warning: This book has a Cliffhanger, but the trilogy is complete.

Coiled tight from my tense situation, I jumped slightly at the sound of Sean patting the bed beside me.

“Sit down, doc,” he ordered lazily.

I glared at him. I had spent enough time on that bed beside the disturbingly handsome man already. “I’d rather not,” I said drily. “And I thought I told you to call me Dr. Ellers.”

His expression froze for a moment, as though taken aback by my gumption. Then his grin widened. “Sit down, Claudia,” he re-phrased, addressing me slightly more respectfully. But it still wasn’t a question; it wasn’t enough for me. Fighting the temptation to be charmed by his heart-melting smile, I held my glare.

He blinked once, then chuckled, a deep, rumbling noise. “Suit yourself,” he shrugged. But he stopped quickly, cut off by a wince as the movement jarred his injury.

“You should try to avoid sudden movements,” I advised.

He grimaced at me, his dark eyes full of pain. “No shit, doc,” he ground out through gritted teeth.

I frowned back at him, piercing him with a sharp glare.

After a moment, he rolled his eyes. “No shit, Claudia,” he corrected. Then he yawned widely. “Your antagonism is wearing me out. That can’t be good for my health,” he accused, but there was a lightness in his tone that suggested he still found me amusing.

“That’s the oxycodone,” I said, trying to suppress a small smile. Despite everything, his easy humor was catching; his levity in the face of intense pain seemed to infect me. “You should rest more,” I said kindly.

“You’re a lot bossier than most of the women I find handcuffed to my bed, you know,” he said. He patted the bed beside him again. “Now sit down. Watching you stand there all tense is making me tired.”

“You should be tired,” I reiterated, but I found my knees folding as though of their own accord. Still, I was careful to position my body as far from Sean as possible, practically perching on the edge of the bed.

It didn’t escape his notice, and his eyes were mocking as he spoke. “I won’t bite you, you know.” Then his grin turned wolfish. “Not unless you want me to, that is. I’d be quite happy -”

“Not in a million years,” I said, cutting him off sharply. While his flirtatious insinuation didn’t set off the internal alarm bells it probably should have, I wasn’t about to establish a precedent for letting sexual innuendos slide. The very thought was disgusting given my situation. “Now, before you go off into some drug-induced lucid fantasy, let’s get something straight: You are not to touch me in any way. You may think your eighth-grade flirting is cute, but it’s pretty fucked up considering that the only reason I’m in your bedroom is that you won’t allow me to leave. So whatever your perverted little mind is imagining, don’t let your fantasy include me as a willing participant.”

The predatory grin was gone from his face as though I had slapped it away. His expression darkened, the lines of his face drawing downwards. He suddenly couldn’t seem to meet my eye. “Claudia, I….”

“You what, Sean?” I asked angrily, hurling his name out like a curse.

“I’m sorry,” he said finally, looking up at me through his long, dark lashes. “I’m sorry I can’t let you leave.”

“But you can,” I said, desperation coloring my tone. “I promise I won’t tell -”

“You just can’t, Claudia!” He said harshly, his eyes snapping up to burn into mine. They were ablaze with an anger so intense that I scooted away from him as far as I could without falling off the bed. The man before me was so different from the flirty, arrogant boy I had seen only moments earlier; this man gave off an aura of power that threatened to overwhelm me. It frightened me almost as much as Bradley’s gun.

But I refused to show how intimidated I was. Summoning up all of my courage, I met his furious gaze. “You should get some rest,” I said coldly.

His fierce expression melted into something almost contrite. “Claudia…” He trailed off, not finishing whatever it was that he was going to tell me. He looked frustrated and a little lost.

Most of my frostiness ebbed in the wake of that small show of vulnerability. Sean truly seemed to regret the fact that he was holding me prisoner. I broke from his gaze, suddenly uncomfortable with the emotional intensity of what was passing between us.

Q&A with Julia Sykes

1. If you were to describe your e-book/book in only one word, what would it be?
Dark-lite. Can I make that one word? I’m making it a word.

2. What would you say inspired you to write it?
I was watching an episode of Castle called “Anatomy of a Murder,” in which a doctor who was in love with a drug lord is killed. I wondered: How does that happen? What was their love story? Monster unfolded in my mind over the next few hours.

3. Your all time favorite book?
Oh, don’t do this to me! Hmmm I think I’ll have to go with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

4. What made you pick that one above all others?
The darkness of the book really resonated with me. I read it when I was twelve, and all of a sudden my happy, magical world became a very dangerous place, with very real consequences. In the last few years, I became fascinated with the idea of playing with that sense of darkness and danger in an unexpected genre. I like pushing the envelope in what is considered an “acceptable” level of violence in Romance.

5. What’s the longest time you’ve spent working on a project?
Definitely my latest book, Rogue (An Impossible Novel). I set it aside to start another project and then again later to write a novella. It’s taken about five months to finish. I love the story, but it’s not nearly as dark as my other books. I think that’s why I struggled. It was hard to transition to something as lighthearted as drug wars and deception. There’s actually some humor in this one!

6. Would you say becoming an author has changed you? In what way?
It has completely changed my whole life! I was working on getting my PhD in Roman Archaeology when I first self-published. Then I started writing Romance more often than my thesis, and I finally said goodbye to my lifelong goal to be a professor. It was scary and a bit heartbreaking, but I wouldn’t change my decision for the world.

7. Is this title part of a series? Without giving us spoilers, of course, what can we expect from the next e-books/books in the series?
I am so glad you asked this! Yes, Monster is part of the Impossible Series. The series order is actually quite confusing, because it started as the serial that tells Sean and Claudia’s story in Monster, Traitor, and Avenger. Then one of my characters wanted his own HEA (I won’t say who to avoid spoilers), so he got his own novel. He had a bunch of friends, and they demanded their HEAs as well. Now there are three novels and a novella in addition to Impossible: The Original Trilogy (Monster, Traitor, and Avenger), and I have seven more books planned in the series. Hopefully it will continue on indefinitely as I meet new characters. All of the stories can stand alone, but if you want to read them “in order,” it goes like this:
Impossible: The Original Trilogy (Monster, Traitor, and Avenger)
Savior (An Impossible Novel)
Knight (An Impossible Novel)
Mentor (An Impossible Novella)
Rogue (An Impossible Novel)

8. What do you have stored for us in the future? What are you working on/planning on next, aside this title/series?
Other than the Impossible books, I’m developing another set of serialized novellas (with cliffhangers, please don’t hate me). This will involve the CIA instead of the FBI, as well as intrigue involving the Chechen Mafia and illegal arms dealing. And there will be plenty of BDSM, of course.

9. Where is your work being distributed, Amazon, B&N, Smashwords, AllRomanceEbooks/Omnilit, some other distributor? How did you decide which one(s) to go with?
My books are available on Amazon, B&N, kobo, Smashwords, and iTunes. I started with Amazon exclusively, and then slowly added other sales channels as I worked my way through understanding the indie world. I’m currently working on making my books available through Google Play.

10. If you could turn back in time and do things differently, would you? What would you change?
I would definitely have communicated with other indie authors before publishing. The wealth of knowledge shared by indies is just incredible. For a while, I felt like I was on a little writing island by myself. Then I attended the Indie Romance Convention in 2013, and it totally changed my writing and marketing process. I learned so much from so many amazing authors. It was a great experience.

Fun Facts

1. If you could wish for any one thing, and it would immediately come true, what would you wish for?
To own my dream Mini Cooper. I’ve wanted one since I was fifteen.

2. If you were stranded on an isolated island, what’s the one book you’d absolutely wish to have with you?
Oh, man! I guess I would have to glue all of George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books together. That would give me several thousand pages of rich characters, violence, deaths, romance, and political intrigue to read again and again. Although it would be nice if the series was finished before I was stranded. Not knowing the end would kill me!

3. Name your favorite fruit.
Pears. The soft ones.

4. Coffee or tea?
Coffee. Definitely coffee.

5. Favorite season?

6. How about favorite time of the day?
Three o’clock in the afternoon. There’s still enough time in the day to get plenty of writing done. It is a time full of promise, and I don’t have to panic until four!

7. Were you a boyscout/girlscout?

8. Favorite food for breakfast?

9. Latest book you’ve bought and read?
Their Virgin Secretary by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake

10. Do you collect things, like stamps, or key chains, or shoes?
I collect ancient Roman coins. I’m not really sure what to do with them, but I can’t seem to resist them. I’m a bad archaeologist for buying antiquities, but I love holding something that connects me with the past.

11. Favorite color, you know you want to tell us!
Blue. No, yellow! Aaarrrghhhh! (Sorry for the obscure reference. I couldn’t resist.)

12. Drama or comedy?
Definitely Drama

13. Have a fav quote or personal motto?

“Of course this is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”
–Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

14. Cats or dogs?
Cats. Hands down.

15. Dinner by candlelight or a night out clubbing?
Dinner by candlelight

16. Favorite swear word?
Fuck. It can be used in so many contexts.

Mimi Strong – Stardust

Stardust by Mimi Strong

Series: Peaches Monroe #1
Source: Personal Library
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

There I was, minding my own business at Peachtree Books when this lunatic comes racing in the door and knocks me into his arms. I would have ripped him a new one, but he was hot. Like I-want-to-have-your-sexy-babies-now hot.

I feel like I know him, because I stare at his gorgeous face on TV every week. Dalton Deangelo. In the firm, sculpted flesh. Have I mentioned how hot he is? My panties practically flew right off.

Now he wants to get to know me. I can’t say no to that face … or those captivating green eyes.

I’m just a regular girl, and he’s rich and famous with no body fat. So, why is he chasing me? And what is this secret of his the reporters are trying to uncover?

I try to keep my eyes wide open. I’ve made terrible, stupid mistakes in the past. But Dalton Deangelo’s touch turns me to Jell-O.

An adorable blend of comedy, romance, and awkwardness…

“Please don’t say the f-word, and I don’t mean fuck.”
“Okay. Not fat. We’ll call my ass… too wide for narrow minds.”

This was a sweet little BBW romance with a superstar twist. Who doesn’t dream of running into their celebrity crush and getting caught up in a whirlwind romance? This story features a ton of awkward (but endearing) humor and is told from the perspective of the heroine, complete with sassy inner-monologue…

Petra “Peaches” Monroe

“Just be yourself,” I whispered to myself. “Except be more fucking charming and not weird. And stop talking to yourself.”

Peaches runs a little bookstore in her home town, and at the age of twenty-two she’s finally coming to terms with her body (which is curvier than most) and her personality (which lacks a brain to mouth filter). She’s established the perfect quiet existence in her hometown until a stranger barges through the door of her bookstore and literally knocks her off her feet.

Dalton Deangelo

“Let’s just be two souls tonight. Two souls who are made of stardust, and found their way back to each other, the way they were destined to.”

He’s the dreamy star of a TV Vampire drama and the object of every woman’s fantasy – a certain roommate of our heroine even named her vibrator after him – and somehow the stars aligned to have him shooting a film in the same small town that Peaches grew up in…

Add in some precocious paparazzi,
some post high-school drama,
crazy extended families,
and one dark secret…
And you get a highly entertaining, laugh-out-loud Rom-Com!

I should warn you that there’s a cliffhanger, and two more books in this completed series.

Side Note: The use of cutesy nicknames for genitalia was equal parts amusing and distracting… It took me a while to wrap my head around the tone of this book, but once I did, it was easy to sit back and let things roll…
Some of the highlights:
pleasure pumpkin,
pink petunia…

Lili St. Germain – Seven Sons

Seven Sons (Gypsy Brothers, #1) Seven Sons by Lili St. Germain

Series: Gypsy Brothers #1
Source: Personal Library
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

My father was most certainly NOT an innocent man. As the leader of the Gypsy Brothers MC, he was guilty of many things. But he died for a crime that he didn’t commit, framed by an enemy within who then stole his club and everything he had ever worked to protect.

Including my innocence.

When Dornan Ross framed my father, he set into motion a series of events that could never be undone. My father was murdered by Dornan Ross and his sons when I was fifteen years old.

Before my father died, Dornan Ross and his seven sons stole my innocence, branded my skin and in doing so, ensured that their lives would be prematurely cut short. That they would suffer.

I’ve just turned twenty-one, and I’m out for blood. I’m out for revenge.

But I didn’t expect to fall for Jase, the youngest brother in the club.

I didn’t expect that he would turn my world upside down, yank my heart out of my chest and ride away into the sunset with it.

Now, I’m faced with an impossible choice – Jase, or avenging my fathers death?

(Some mild spoilers and a lot of cursing in this review)

I was all hopped up on the description of this book.
Excited about the potential…

A girl fighting to avenge her father…
A corrupt Motorcycle Club…
A tragic loss of innocence plants a seed for revenge..
She will rise like a phoenix from the ashes!!!!

Then I was completely let down.

I’m not sure what happened with this book… So many of the elements should have come together to form a great story, but something was missing.

The tragic past of Juliette Portland (aka Sammi)…
There were a ton of dark moments which reminded Julz of her mission…
There was some decent sex if you can get over the serious ICK factor…
Also on the up-side, this book was free & a very short read… I think it might have taken me a bit longer than usual because I can’t read while rolling my eyes…

As much as I adore fiction (and letting myself slip into a fantasy land) you will never ever convince me that a victim of gang rape is going to go looking for the ringleader of her attack & let him fuck her over a desk within the first 15 minutes of seeing him…

That was my first clue that Juliette Portland was a poor planner of revenge. That was her Plan A! Of course it doesn’t take long for her to figure out that maybe she should have had a better plan… But by that time I was less interested in Juliette getting her revenge, my focus was on watching the epic train wreck she was creating.

Also, in the description of this book, we were promised that she was going to fall for the youngest son & that was supposed to be a major complication… That didn’t happen… Unless not hating someone somehow translates to love

Read at your own risk, folks. I doubt I’ll be buying the next book when it comes out.

Cherise Sinclair – Club Shadowlands

Club Shadowlands by Cherise Sinclair

Series: Masters of the Shadowlands #1
Source: Personal Library
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Her car disabled during a tropical storm, Jessica Randall discovers the isolated house where she’s sheltering is a private bondage club. At first shocked, she soon becomes aroused watching the interactions between the Doms and their subs. But she’s a professional woman–an accountant–and surely isn’t a submissive…is she?

Master Z hasn’t been so attracted to a woman in years. But the little sub who has wandered into his club intrigues him. She’s intelligent. Reserved. Conservative. After he discovers her interest in BDSM, he can’t resist tying her up and unleashing the passion she hides within.

This was a fun introduction to the Masters of the Shadowlands series…

If you follow my updates, you might have seen my surprise when I discovered that I had already read this book… I figured this out within the first few sentences and was more than a little surprised… Not that I had read a book that was published four years ago, but that I could barely remember anything about it…

Here is what I could remember:
After a car crash, a young woman takes shelter in a strange house,
Which turns out to be a BDSM club,
And they let her in,
She meets a charming Dom who happens to own the place,
She explores her sexuality,
She was a secret sub all along,
Charming Dom realizes he has met his match with her,
Happily Ever After…

…Basically, it sounded like every other BDSM Club book I’ve ever read.

So now that I’ve re-read this book, what can I add to my previously fuzzy memory?
Nothing really.

I had forgotten how neurotic and obnoxious the main character, Jessica was…
She really didn’t have any character development. She never really overcame (or attempted to overcome) her body issues – He made her feel pretty, which is a start… But it’s not the basis for a personality.

I forgot that her “charming Dom” Master Z had the whole Mind Reader thing going on…
Yeah. Mind Reader…

…And I was reminded why this book fuzzed out in my memory.

On the plus side, this was a fairly subdued and gentle introduction for the fuzzy-handcuff Erotica fans.

I’ll probably pick up the rest of the series at some point with the hope that his book was intended to be a gentile segue into Club Shadowlands, and that the subsequent books with have something more creative and substantial to offer this (admittedly jaded) reader of BDSM Erotica.
