Rochelle Paige – Push the Envelope

Push the Envelope by Rochelle Paige

Series: Blythe College #1

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Alexa is just your average college junior, attending classes and piloting Mile High Club charter flights. Boys haven’t been on her radar for a couple years after a disastrous breakup with her high school sweetheart. Her plans to focus on school hit a bit of a snag when she meets bad-boy Drake Bennett and he sets his sights on making her his own.

Drake transferred to Blythe College for the rugby team, not for a new assortment of college girls. He’s sexy and cocky, and he attracts women like moths to a flame. When he meets Alexa, Drake knows he’s met his match. She tries to resist him, but Drake isn’t used to taking no for an answer.

This does not have a cliffhanger.

A sweet and steamy New Adult Read!

I loved the “Mile High Club” Twist in this book… I just wish there was more of it…

Flowers… Check
Chocolates… Check

Champagne chilled and ready to go… check.
Noise canceling headphones so I didn’t have to listen to whatever noises were going to float up from the rear cabin… check.
This was so totally not the normal pilot’s checklist.
Who knew there were so many middle-aged housewives looking to spice up their marriages?

Push the Envelope is a lovely blend of humor and romance, I’m so glad I picked it up. Great characters and fun dialogue came together to form a sweet romance with a touch of heat.

“Alexa, you okay?” I heard Drake ask from behind me as his hand skated up my spine.

I turned and smiled at Drake. “yup, everything’s okay. I’m just excited to get back in the cockpit.”

Drake chuckled huskily, “I’d love to hear you say cock in a totally different setting, babe.”

Alexa is a rare bird in the world of Modern NA Romance- A heroine with a backbone and a brain! She’s working her way through business school by putting her hard-earned pilot’s license to use, and flying “Mile High” tours which allow a couple to get horizontal in the back of a private plane.

Between work and school, she has no time for parties and boys…

She’s determined not to fall into bed with the first man who has sparked her interest in years… Even if that man is devastatingly attractive and doesn’t back down from the challenge…

“…The gelato is fine. It’s just not what I’m hungry for right now.” Drake licked his lips and flashed a sexy grin my way.

“I’m not touching that comment with a ten-foot pole!” I joked.

“How about a ten-inch pole?” Drake glanced down at his lap and wagged his eyebrows.

Drake your standard smokin’ hot Alpha Male rugby player with his sights set on Alexa. The type of guy who always seems to have a gaggle of gorgeous coeds following him on campus. But he only has eyes for the one girl who seems completely immune to his charms…

This was delayed gratification done right.

Drake makes his intentions perfectly clear, but the two don’t fall directly into bed… There’s a slow burn and a (nearly unbearable) build up of UST before the two hit the sheets…

I know what you’re thinking, but this isn’t your standard “college girl deflowering” story. Odd that when two characters actually take the time to get to know each other before having sex, one automatically jumps to the conclusion that someone is
a) a snow-white pure virgin
b) dealing with a tragic previous sexual encounter

Not the case with Push the Envelope. There was a believable progression of their relationship. No instalove BS, no dark past to be overcome… This book was adorable and gave me some laughs and a case of the warm fuzzies, which is nice every now and then!

I had the opportunity to chat with Rochelle Paige at the 2014 Louisville Authors Event, and she is FANTASTIC. I HAD to grab a copy of this book after talking to her.

Did you know that there REALLY IS a place in Ohio that you can charter a flight to join the Mile High Club?

Alessandra Torre – Still

Still by Alessandra Torre

Series: Unknown (See Below)
Source: Personal Library
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

My feet hurt. Four inches of a-size-too-small shoes will do that to a girl. Especially a girl who is used to sensible flats, paired with nylons and JC Penny skirt suits. But your best friend only gets married once, and when she is paying for an all-expense paid bachelorette party to the Bahamas, the sane thing to do is hop on that plane, put on your sexiest pair of strappies, sip on penis-shaped straws, and dance your feet off.

I wasn’t looking for a man. Wasn’t planning to do anything but hobble my swollen feet up to the room and collapse. Maybe splurge on minibar candy and a six dollar bottle of water. I may not have been looking, but when you run into a man like Brett Jacobs, you don’t walk away. You wipe up your drool, remember your southern graces, and bat your eyelashes.

I may have forgotten my southern graces. They may have gotten lost in the pushmeupagainstthewall and takemehere action that occurred. In the clothesripping ohmygod action that followed. They may have, along with my sanity and common sense, left me with bruised lips, ripped panties, multiple orgasms, and blistered feet.

God bless cheap shoes, impulse decisions, and weak willpower.

What are the odds that a weekend hookup during your friend’s Bachelorette weekend can turn into the real deal?

I don’t need to think, to analyze. I threw reason and safety and good decisions out the window as soon as I walked through the door to his suite. I traded logic for a touch that I desperately crave…

Riley would much rather be spending a weekend on her front porch in Macon, Georgia than dragged to the Bahamas on a wild Bachelorette party for her friend Chelsea… But there she is.

Sensible, responsible, boring Riley in a tiny dress and fuck-me shoes…

After overindulging in food, drink, sun, and gambling, Riley has certainly met her “party girl” quota for the day. She hobbles her way back toward her hotel room on sore and blistered feet when she is saved by Tall Dark & Handsome who offers her a pair of fuzzy slippers.

I guess you could say he swept her off her feet…

After some sexy banter, he offers to walk her back to her hotel room. Ever the gentleman, the mysterious stranger says goodnight to Riley without pressing for more, and she is left reeling…

Fuck him. I don’t need a one-night stand anyway. My dusty vagina is perfectly happy with the extensive network of cobwebs it’s spent years creating.
Somewhere, in the empty recesses of my mind, my subconscious tears to pieces the ‘I love Brett’ picture and moves on to more official business.

Yes, Riley is adorably awkward and undersexed while being level-headed and full of Southern Charm. I adored her…

“…you will be mine. You will not return to life as you know it. You will not flirt with men around the water cooler at work. You will bend for me, spread for me, allow me to have every inch of your surface, all while screaming my name and shuddering into my heart. That is what I mean.”

Brett is a man who doesn’t fall into one-night stands, but he is helpless to the draw of this Southern Belle who has captured his attention…

I have a single complaint:
It was soooooooooo short…

I know that seems like a ridiculous thing to complain about while reading a collection of short stories… But there it is.

Alessandra Torre creates wonderfully complex characters and thrusts them into situations which keep you on the edge of your seat, but there were too few pages to convey that sort of feeling…

She indicates that this is the beginning of something wildly beautiful (and I believe that with all of my pervy little heart) but we’re left without any dates for the continuation of this story.

I shall anxiously await more information…

Kresley Cole – The Professional

The Professional (Game Maker, #1)The Professional by Kresley Cole

Series: Game Maker #1
Source: Review By Request
ARC Provided by Publisher
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The highly anticipated complete novel of The Professional—the first installment in #1 New York Times bestselling author Kresley Cole’s scorching Game Maker series, an erotica collection that has readers asking: How hot is too hot?

He makes the rules…

Mafiya enforcer Aleksei “The Siberian” Sevastyan’s loyalty to his boss knows no bounds, until he meets the boss’s long-lost daughter, a curvy, feisty redhead who haunts his mind and heats his blood like no other. Ordered to protect her, Aleksei will do anything to possess her as well—on his own wicked terms.

Rules are made to be broken…

Grad student Natalie Porter had barely recovered from her first sight of the dark and breathtaking Sevastyan before the professional enforcer whisks her away to Russia, thrusting her into a world of extreme wealth and wanton pleasures. Every day under his protection leads her deeper under his masterful spell.

Are you ready to play?

Yet all is not as it seems. To remove Natalie from an enemy’s reach, Sevastyan spirits her into hiding. From an opulent palace in Russia to the decadent playgrounds of the mega-wealthy in Paris, the two lovers will discover that even their darkest—and most forbidden—fantasies can come true…

Maybe it was just me?
Were my expectations too high?

I’d never been in a situation like this.
A sexual situation I didn’t control. I was embroiled in dangerous circumstances with a mysterious stranger, but I felt no fear. I felt… anticipation. And I suspected the lack of control was fueling it. Was danger turning me on?

This is a 3.5 Star read for me… But I’m hoping that Kresley Cole will continue the series. I think that if I could have a second book (with a bit more character development) then I would be perfectly happy with the series. As it stands, however, I was entertained but not amazed…

What DOES amaze me is how polarizing this book seems to be…
Personally, I didn’t LOVE it or HATE it…
But after I finished, everything seemed a little flat for my liking.

I wanted to love this, but the more I reflect on my experience with the book, the less impressed I am.

Great Erotica…
Interesting Plot…
Laugh out loud humor…

But something was off with Sevastyan & Natalie…

Aleksei Sevastyan

“…You think I can’t tell when a woman wants me burried deep inside her?”

He is a combination of over the top alpha-male hotness and complete emotional unavailability.
Quite simply: He is not Book Boyfriend Material…
He is, however, absurdly gifted between the sheets…

Erotica will always be better when there is an emotional connection. Sevastyan was so ridiculously stereotypical “broken alpha-male” that I lost all interest in him. He had all the personality and usefulness of a dildo.

Natalie Porter

I, Natalie Porter, had gotten my rocks off while being spanked. And I was going to roll with it.

At times, Natalie was just another stereotypical “quirky, virgin, college student” who discovers her taste for submission. But in the moments where she asserts herself, she redeems the entire book…
Quite simply: She is a naive twenty-something ripe for sexual corruption.

The truly interesting thing about Natalie is that she went from being a Nebraska Farm girl to a Mafia Princess overnight. So, why was that adjustment process kind of glossed over? That was a missed opportunity.

I never really felt the love between these two… Even their sexual chemistry was stunted by Sevastyan’s absurd behavior. Generally speaking, when I’m faced with the “virginal college girl is seduced by older man with a taste for BDSM” trope, I find myself liking the mysterious male more than the female MC… The opposite was true of this book.

I should also point out that Natalie’s (equally stereotypical) sex-crazed best friend Jess had all of the best dialogue in the book.

UPDATE MAY 10, 2014:

I had the opportunity to say hello to Kresley Cole in Memphis while she was traveling with the Belles on Wheels Book Tour. I had an awkward photo op and asked a few questions about the Professional Series.

I wanted to know if Sevastyan & Natalie’s story will continue in a second book… The answer was “no.” Apparently Sevastyan’s brothers are going to get their own books, but we’ve seen all the character development we’re going to get out of these two…

Allyson James – Calder

Calder by Allyson James

Series: Tales of the Shareem #4
Source: Personal Library
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Medic Katarina d’Arnal moves to the slums to work in a free clinic and ends up drawing the job of inoculating Shareem. The first Shareem who shows up is the Calder, a level three, muffled from head to foot, refusing to bare even an inch of skin. He’s used to an elderly medic who jabs him and lets him go, not the pretty, young highborn woman who wants to do everything by the book.

Calder hides himself because, unlike the rest of the Shareem—the handsome, arrogant, a-holes—Calder is scarred all over, the result of a plasma fire years ago. He’s learned that women crave to be with him, as hideous as he is, and he’s created a world where they can indulge in their darkest fantasies with the Beast. He give them an exotic experience with a capital E.

But this woman, Katarina, looks at Calder the man, and wants to know all about him. Calder decides to show her what he is when she’s tricked into visiting his lair—but Katarina keeps insisting on touching his burned face with her gentle fingers, trying to find the man behind the tormented Beast.

Calder knows if he lets her in to what he truly is, it will be the end of him……

Nothing satisfies quite like a mysterious tortured hero…

“This is Calder, sweetheart,” Braden said. “One of the best level threes ever made. Means he’s gentle as a kitten one minute, dangerous as a desert tiger the next. You never know what he’s going to do.”
But that made him more exciting.

Calder was a wonderfully crafted character. The author had set up his mysterious and foreboding persona in the the previous books. He was more intriguing than any other Shareem by the time we got to his book.

a.k.a The Beast: Level Three Shareem

Braden on Calder:

“…Forget about Calder, sweetheart. He’s . . . Put it this way—when he got burned he went to a bad place, and I don’t mean the DNAmo lab. He never really recovered. There’s a darkness to him that a pretty lady like you doesn’t need to touch. He’s taken level three to a height even I don’t understand. And I’m pretty bad-ass.”

We knew that Calder was disfigured by a fire when he was being experimented on at DNAmo. We also know that Dr. Laas saved him, but that he had not mentally recovered from the incident. He covered himself head to toe in black robes and goggles, allowing no one to see his mangled skin.

This aversion to nudity does not serve him well when he checks into the clinic for his required inoculations. The pretty little doctor working at the slum clinic insists that he disrobe for a full exam. Naturally, Calder refuses. He rips the hypo from her hand, inoculates himself, then storms out of the clinic leaving a baffled Dr. Katarina d’Arnal behind.

a.k.a. Dr. Katarina d’Arnal

She suddenly understood the complete appeal of Shareem, why women would pay fortunes for an appointment with Calder.
Shareem would do anything in the name of pleasure. And there was a hint of uncertainty about how far they would go.

Calder has a gimmick to cope with his disfigurement, he has created a pleasure palace where he hunts his prey in the dark. He capitalizes on wealthy women’s captive fantasies, and makes a ton of money doing it. There’s a waiting list a mile long to get in. And once you’re in Calder’s lair there’s no safe word, no mercy… He will hunt you, he will find you, and you’ll learn what it is like to be with the BEAST.

As I said, the wait-list to be hunted by the BEAST is a mile long, but meddling Dr. Angelica Laas (who we’ve known from previous books) decides to play match-maker. She hack’s Calder’s database and inserts a listing for little miss Katarina. She then sends a transmission to the clinic Dr. d’Arnal works at and informs them that someone is in need of medical attention at Calder’s address. You see where this is going?

Once Katarina realizes that she’s been set up in this erotic situation with the Shareem she has been dreaming about, she willingly submits herself to the dark and to the desires of the BEAST…

I’ve got mixed feelings with this one folks. A few things bothered me about this installment in the Tales of the Shareem Series:

Insta-Love has been a near constant in this series, and I’ve been more-or-less cool with it. The heroines always seem to fall in love very quickly with their Shareem, but for some reason, Katarina seemed to fall extra hard, extra fast…

Maybe I feel this way because because I loved the connection between Ky & Aiden in the last book? Their connection grew over twenty years, so the love seemed more real/deep to me?

In addition, Calder’s mood swings kind of drove me nuts. One second he was so sure that he wanted Katarina, the next he was running away and hiding in his lair for weeks. There’s a difference between “broken” and “childish”.

That being said, once the emotion started pouring honestly from both main characters, the book became immensely enjoyable! Calder and Katarina were a little awkward in the beginning, but once all the petty behavior was set aside, and the real conflicts began to occur… Wow.

This story Features:
oral sex,
vaginal sex,
anal sex,
captive fantasies,
light bondage,
MFM menage,
& Double penetration…
