Excerpt:

I slipped into the jacket and latched the repeating circles onto my wrist. The bottom of the coat stopped just where the broad lines of the dress changed from horizontal to vertical. “What do you think?” I asked Samantha.

“You look stunning,” a deep male voice responded. I turned around and found Stay smiling at me.

“Wow Stay,” Sam said before I could respond. “Looking mighty handsome. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think this is a date.”

Stayman looked sharp in his black dress pants, matching coat, and dark-gray dress shirt. I gazed at him but was at a loss for words. We stared at each other for a second.

Sam saved me by saying, “Stay, there’s a wire mannequin in the attic that I’d like brought down, and Lane and I can’t lift it. I wondered if you could do that for us. Not now. I wouldn’t want you to mess up your clothes, but—”

As he removed his coat, he said, “It shouldn’t take long and I’ll just take off my shirt.”

He started unbuttoning as both Samantha and I watched as he slowly revealed his chest. Stay slipped out of his shirt and laid it neatly on top of his jacket.

His smooth, lean torso was highly defined and I got caught staring at his chest. He winked at me and then said to Sam, “Come on and show me the way.”

Once they walked away, I glared into the mirror and said, “Don’t even think about it.”

Minutes later, he had managed to carry the mannequin down.

“Let’s put it in the back,” I said, leading the way. “It needs to be cleaned up before it can be out on the floor.” I showed him where to put it. Scanning his physique from his head to his shoes, I noticed that he continued to let his golden-brown hair grow in and chose to where black boots instead of dress shoes. To make matters worse, his five o’clock shadow was incredibly sexy. Damn, he looks hot. Look away girl, just look away!

“Here,” I said, holding out a lint roller, but not making eye contact.

Some dust had settled on the front of his pants just over the zipper area. “You don’t want to help?”

I turned away and said, “Go get dressed.”

“Are you sure that’s your final decision?”

“Very sure.” My rapidly beating heart settled down once his clothing was back on.

“Are you ready to go?” he asked.

“Let me go grab my clothes bag and my clutch and I will be.” Sam followed me into my office.

“He looks hot!” she exclaimed. “He must really like you. I’ve never seen him dressed up before.”

“Stop it,” I said, making sure my dress lay straight.

“Forget about MM for the night,” she said to me with a serious expression. She pulled the tag off my jacket.

“That’s not possible. Thanks for closing up and helping with the outfit.”

“No problem.”

She graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a degree in psychology, which accounts for her particular interest in crafting the personalities, struggles, and motivations of her characters. Blakely is married to a wonderful, loving and supportive husband, also a writer, who helps to keep her grounded. She is a mother, a communitarian, a lover of music (always on while she is writing—thank you, Pandora), and a good friend. An advocate of love and female empowerment, she is a facilitator for a women’s group. She loves to walk and hike for exercise and finds that, since moving to Seattle, WA, she is now one of those “crazy” people who walk in the rain.
Bittersweet Deceit (erotic romance) is her 6th novel. She is also the author of the dark erotic suspense, My Body Trilogy (My Body-His, My Body-His (Marcello) & My Body-Mine) and co-authored the contemporary romance, The Demarcation of Jack with her husband, Dana Bennett.

Jacqs is a twenty-eight year old woman caught up in an on again, off again relationship with Bond, who is her best friend and the one who causes her the most heartache. She succumbs, yet again, to his powerful charisma, but vows not make it into more than it is, a great night of sex.

Bond, too sexy for his own good, wants Jacqs for himself as he “dates” his way through the female population of South Florida. He selfishly doesn’t see the conflict of interest.

Red, Bond’s best friend, has watched Bond take Jacqs for granted for way too long and soon stakes his own claim on her.

Will Red and Jacqs budding relationship pull apart their tight-knit group of friends and will Jacqs survive being Stuck In Between.

Star_full48Star_full48Star_full48

Sometimes a book just rubs me the wrong way…
THIS is one of those books…

“I’m not sure why you need so much drama in your life, Jacqueline. My advice is to forget them both and move on.”

Let me be clear: I have never ‘DNF’d a book before, but I came dangerously close to closing this one for good.

The writing had multiple rough edges which could have been smoothed out with the use of an editor or even careful proofreading.

The dialogue was awkward and stilted, there was questionable sexual innuendo, and completely unbelievable (to the point of mood-killing) pillow talk…

There were a ton of superfluous details regarding makeup, clothing, etc which managed to turn a story about a group of people in their late-twenties / mid-thirties, to a story about obnoxious teenagers.

This sophomoric vibe was enhanced by the endless angst which dripped from every page…

I might have been able to handle all of those detractors if not for one VERY IMPORTANT fact: The three main characters were completely unlikable.

I couldn’t get invested in this twisted love triangle because I didn’t have a desire to see any of these people happy. Why should they be rewarded for making ridiculous decisions over and over again?

I guess the only redeeming thing about this entire book is that these three deserved each other.

I don’t remember ever wanting to strangle a fictional character as much as I did with Jacqueline.

JACQUELINE

“This can’t possibly end well and I know you are smart enough to know it.”

Jacqs has herself stuck in a love triangle between her cheating asshole ex-boyfriend Bond and her ex-boyfriend’s domineering best friend Red…

Some might be inclined to believe that these two men are taking advantage of the dim-witted Jacqueline… But Jacqs got herself into this ridiculous position… She seems particularly adept at lamenting all of the self-inflicted problems in her life, yet seems incapable of making any positive decisions for herself.

BOND

“When will you understand that my dating other women doesn’t take away from my love for you?”

Yeah… No… Bond & Jacqs have been on-again-off-again for almost a decade. He cheats, she’s helpless to refuse his charms, she keeps going back to him, he keeps fucking everyone else.

And I’m supposed to understand Jacqueline’s love for him?

RED

“Thank you.”
“What for?”
“Loving me back.”
“You didn’t give me much chance to refuse.”

Apparently Red has been in love with Jacqueline for a long time and it’s been killing him to watch his best friend treat her like shit… So in oder to hide his feelings for her, he’s been treating her with a combination of hostility and complete disinterest for years… Sounds like a knight in shining armor to me…

I can’t recommend this book to anyone.
I can’t think of a single reason to enjoy so much absurdity…

Alice Clayton – Rusty Nailed

Rusty Nailed by Alice Clayton

Series: Cocktail #2
Source: Personal Library
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

In this sequel to Wallbanger, the second book in the Cocktail series, fan favorites Caroline and Simon negotiate the rollercoaster of their new relationship while house-sitting in San Francisco.

Playing house was never so much fun—or so confusing. With her boss on her honeymoon, Caroline’s working crazy long hours to keep the interior design company running—especially since she’s also the lead designer for the renovation of a gorgeous old hotel on Sausalito. So with her hotshot photographer boyfriend gallivanting all over the world for his job, she and Simon are heavy-duty into “absence makes the heart grow fonder” mode. Neither has any complaints about the great reunion sex, though! Then Simon decides he’s tired of so much travelling, and he’s suddenly home more. A lot more. And wanting Caroline home more, too. Though their friends’ romantic lives provide plenty of welcome distraction, eventually Caroline and Simon have to sort their relationship out. Neither wants “out of sight, out of mind,” but can they create their own happy mid-ground cliché?

USA TODAY bestselling author Alice Clayton delivers another delicious, frothy cocktail of a book, shaking up her characters, stirring in laugh-out-loud humor, and serving sizzling romance straight up!

Star_full48Star_full48Star_full48Star_half

Sorry Folks…

Itty bitty mild spoilers:

Settling in. Not settling. Big difference.

I wish I had better news on this one. Alas, the follow-up to the amazing Wallbanger fell short for me…

This is probably my own fault:

When an author as talented as Alice Clayton publishes a book, I think I hold it to a higher standard than I would for a new author. Is it fair to hold authors to my own arbitrary expectations?

Probably not.

I finished this book several days ago and I’ve been hesitating on this review. I LOVED Wallbanger; it was a 5 Star read for me and I’ve recommended it countless times. I adore Alice Clayton; she’s lovely and talented. The truth is, I didn’t HATE this book, but it wasn’t that great either…

I’m going to say the three little words no Book Blogger likes to say: I got bored… I did. I’m not happy about it… The high-points were fantastic, but there was so much that dragged this book down…

It was still enjoyable (even if it failed to meet the hopes I had for it) and fans of the first book will like knowing how Wallbanger & Pink Nightie Girl are faring in their new relationship…

However, all the magic packed into the first book just didn’t quite make it into the sequel…

The majority of the conflict was between Sophia & Neil… Are you having a hard time recalling why you should care about characters named Sophia and Neil when this book is supposed to be about Caroline & Simon?

Me too…

“How much trouble would I get in for stealing the cake knife and castrating him?” she asked, two more women hustling by to get away.
“Lots. Can we talk about this without mentioning castration?”
“Doubtful; right now I want his dick in a hot dog bun.”

I went into this book feeling ‘meh’ about the little side relationships between Caroline’s besties and Simon’s bros (not my terminology, BTW) so the fact that so much of the plot was devoted to them rather than the MC’s was kind of a drag… Sophia broke up with Neil, there’s a lot of will-they-or-won’t-they, and the remaining two couples suffer the fallout of their friends breaking up, taking sides, and plotting to get them back together.

Caroline Reynolds
aka Pink Nightie Girl

Dirty talk is an art. Do it too often, it becomes routine. Never do it, and you’re missing something. Simon did it just right. He was like a perfect bowl of smutty porridge: just right.

Jillian (Caroline’s Boss) ties the knot in this book, and as she takes off on a looooong Honeymoon, she puts Caroline in charge of Jillian Designs. The workload is huge, but so is the opportunity to run a business. Long hours and work stress aren’t so hard to juggle when your boyfriend is an in demand photographer who is rarely home… But for better or worse, Simon IS home. Suddenly he’s home all the time…

Simon Parker
aka Wallbanger

…he was sophisticated but cool. A man about town, a globetrotter, a secret cat whisperer who would sell his soul for an apple pie. And he was mine.

Simon is in his first real relationship and seems to be struggling to figure out what ‘home’ is for him. When an invitation to his 10 year high school reunion takes him to his hometown for the first time since his parents died, he begins to shift perspective. He’s acting strangely – I say this because we only see things from Caroline’s POV so we don’t know WTF Simon is going through – he’s turning down jobs and trips and is staying home…

A lot…
He’s always at home…
Caroline is always at work…
(this is the central problem in THEIR relationship)

There was still a lot to like about this book.
Poor Caroline still talks about her O,
There’s still a ton of great humor,
Simon is still completely adorable,
Quick witted dialogue,
The sex is fabulous,
& Clive is awesome…

Clive

I truly was wise beyond my ears

And of course, little Clive stole the show… His exploits and shenanigans provided the catalyst for one of the only real moments of vocalized emotion between the couple…

So there you have it…
If you loved Wallbanger as much as I did, you probably won’t be swayed from reading this. Even if I had read poor reviews prior to reading, I probably would have downloaded it anyway. If you do read it, let me know what you think 😉

J.R. Ward – Lover Enshrined

Lover Enshrined by J.R. Ward

Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood #6
Source: Personal Library
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

In this “frighteningly addictive” paranormal romance saga there’s a war raging between vampires and their slayers. Here are the stories of a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. And now a dutiful twin must choose between two lives…

Fiercely loyal to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Phury has sacrificed himself for the good of the race, becoming the male responsible for keeping the Brotherhood’s bloodlines alive. As Primale of the Chosen, he is obligated to father the sons and daughters who will ensure that the traditions of the race survive, and that there are warriors to fight those who want all vampires extinguished.

As his first mate, the Chosen Cormia wants to win not only his body, but his heart for herself. She is drawn to the noble responsibility behind the emotionally scarred male. But Phury has never allowed himself to know pleasure or joy. As the war with the Lessening Society grows grim, tragedy looms over the Brotherhood’s mansion, and Phury must decide between duty and love….

Star_full48Star_full48Star_full48Star_half

A clear departure from the Black Dagger Brotherhood…
For better or worse…
(
(BEWARE OF SPOILERS)

“For fuck’s sake, get off the cross. Someone else needs the wood.”

I’ve taken a few days to gather my thoughts before writing this review. Truth is, I did not love this book… But, I didn’t hate it either… It was just different from the other books in the series and didn’t live up to my own expectations. That’s not the author’s fault.

One of the main problems: This was supposed to be Phury’s moment in the spotlight, but I’m not sure he really had his chance to shine. There was so much going on in the Brotherhood (and in the Lessening Society) that Phury had to share a lot of pages… However, Phury and his “woe is me” attitude was driving me crazy, so maybe that is a good thing?

I’m still not sure.

One thing is for certain, there was a serious problem with supposedly bad-ass vampires being little pansy-ass babies…

PHURY

He tapped the artificial leg. “I am not whole.” True, she thought sadly. He was not whole, although it had nothing to do with him missing part of a limb.

Phury’s meltown outshines all the other melodraptic moments over the course of the series. Combined. He could best be described as self-loathing wrapped in drug addict and dipped in haunted past. That’s not the kind of sundae you want to indulge in.

His only redeeming quality is the one which got him in so much trouble – he has an over-active savior complex and was named Primale in the previous book to save his brother from the fate.

CORMIA

“As much as we have free choice, absolute destiny is immutable. What is meant to happen does, through one measure or another.”

Cormia is a chosen. Virginal, naieve, and bland as her all-white-food diet. She wasn’t nearly as obnoxios as Marissa (Lover Revealed) but she wasn’t amusing, entertaining, or even interesting.

You know that this review needs? A personal anecdote used as a metaphor!

I had a friend in culinary school, and it was our job to taste all of her homework. She was amazingly talented in the kitchen and created theses stunning masterpieces of cakes, cookies, chocolates, & candies…
*drooling just thinking about it*
But when the class moved on to fruit-filled tarts, my friend was useless. For all her talent, the girl couldn’t bake a tart to save her life… It always left a bad taste in your mouth… Were the tarts inedible? No. But we had come to expect this superlative level of achievement out of her, so our own expectations let us down.

See where I’m going with this?

Lover Enshrined might not have been the most awesome installment of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, but as a whole, everything fell into place.

I loved the whole side-story of my boys – John, Blay, & Qhuinn. That was the best part of the whole book in my humble opinion…

I liked meeting the Angel, Lassiter, and I hope to see more of him.

I absolutely adored the fact that Thor is back… even if he’s barely alive… I loved the way emotions washed over John in the wake of seeing his adopted father again.

And speaking of fathers: Lash as The Omega’s son is going to make the Lessening society a far more interesting place… And I’m loving Mr. D the Texan

I’ve already started reading Lover Avenged, so obviously there’s no love lost between me and the BDB…

Two more things:

  1. The texting language and slang was WAY over the top in this book. I know the Brothers enjoy their Pop Culture references, and are as modern as can be, but seriously… Tone it down. You’re hundred of years old, quit talking like a 12 year old.
  2. I’ve been quiet for too many books about the sheer number of brands that are mentioned by name in each book. Stay tuned, because I’m writing down every brand name mentioned in the next book, and I’ll have a visual representation ready for you in my next review which will literally illustrate my point.

Ella Dominguez – Continental Breakfast

Continental Breakfast by Ella Dominguez

Series: Continental Affair #1
Source: Personal Library
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Bella Darcy is personal assistant, muse and plaything to wealthy businessman Mr. Pettifor. Their 9-5 relationship is unconventional, but mutually satisfying.

Mr. Pettifor is alpha male personified – demanding, stern, insatiable, emotionally closed-off and seemingly indifferent to anything that doesn’t involve six zeros behind it.

Bella had never wanted more until the day she heard passionate cries that didn’t belong to her, coming from his office. Deeply hurt and realizing that she cannot be with a man who can so blatantly be with another woman while she is mere feet away, Bella turns in her letter of resignation, throwing Mr. Pettifor into a tailspin. Everything he’s worked so hard for now seems insignificant and the woman whom he trained to be everything he wanted, has now decided to move on, leaving him reeling.

Star_full48Star_full48Star_full48

Short, sweet, & sizzling hot!

I keep a very close watch over his schedule and time, as well as seeing to his personal needs, in all matters. But the best parts of our routine are the mornings and they are what I treasure the most. When Mr. Pettifor comes over the intercom to tell me he wants his continental breakfast, I know it’s not eggs and a bagel that he’s requesting.

…that’s right, some good ol’ fashioned bagin’ the boss kink!
Yum.

Continental Breakfast is the first of a three part series following the unconventional relationship of Bella Darcy and her boss, Mr. Pettifor… While this installment is short – coming in at a mere 53 pages – it packs an erotic punch which will knock your socks off!

We share a symbiotic relationship that goes without saying. His needs are met and so are mine.

This is an unraveling relationship which causes both parties to rethink the nature of their partnership before it’s too late…

Bella Darcy is ready to move on and train a replacement to suit the needs of her demanding boss.
…or is she?

Q&A with Ella Dominguez

1. If you were to describe your e-book/book in only one word, what would it be?
Unconventional.

2. What would you say inspired you to write it?
Reading. I was reading at an early age, around four, and ever since then, I’ve been writing my own stories.

3. What was the source of inspiration for your protagonist? What about your antagonist?
I didn’t really have a source of inspiration for these particular characters. They just popped into my head. Actually, I dreamt about them. My dreams are very, VERY vivid. I woke up and wrote it in about ten hours.

4. Have you ever been hit by the infamous “writer’s block”? What did you do to escape it?
Ugh. YES! Every book I write, I’m struck with it. I’m not sure if it’s actually writer’s block or just anxiety and self-doubt. Reading helps me to get over it. Reading also inspires me. I just have to push myself forward and remind myself that I’m my own worst critic.

5. Your all time favorite book?
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

6. What made you pick that one above all others?
It’s always been a book near and dear to my heart. It was the first book I read as a child where the story spoke to me. I must’ve read it 100 times growing up. It’s the book that made me love literature.

7. What’s the longest time you’ve spent working on a project?
I don’t really know. I’ve never counted the days it took to finish a project so I’m only guessing, but I THINK This Love’s Not for Sale took me the longest. I think around 6-8 weeks. ???

8. Would you say becoming an author has changed you? In what way?
No. I’m still the same dirty-minded, raunchy and sarcastic individual I always was.

9. Was there ever a time, during your work for the e-book/book, when you felt like giving up? What made you change your mind?
Not really. If there’s a story to be told, my characters generally won’t give me the option to ‘give up’ or quit until their story is written.

10. What does your day-to-day life consist of? What else do you do, aside writing?
Now that I’m no longer working as a respiratory therapist and I’m writing full-time, my day consists of waking far too late, brain storming, participating in waaaay too much social media on line, brain storming some more, doing a little writing, procrastinating about writing,, and then finally sitting my ass down to write. Oh yeah, I also have to keep my husband and daughter entertained in the process and clean up after their constant destruction of my home.

11. How do you deal with bad reviews or acid criticism? What would you advise other authors to that effect?
I’ve only recently stopped reading anything under 3 stars. For nearly two years I’ve read everything, the good, the bad and the ugly, and I can honestly tell you, the negativity soul crushing. Some people are just cruel and even though I told myself time and time again to take it with a grain of salt, I couldn’t. I even considered stopping writing altogether because of some of those reviews. My only advice to other authors is to just take what you can from them and try to move forward, because some of those 1 star reviews did help me grow.

Now, for the process after reading a bad review: After reading the harsh review, I pout and chastise myself for reading it and for my horrible writing skills. Next, I reread it and get angry. More pouting is involved at this point, too. I walk away only to come back and REREAD the damned thing. My sarcasm comes spilling out and I end up yelling at the screen. Finally, I make myself a margarita, lay back, relax and try to forget the harsh words. After all that, I REPEAT the process at least a few more times. It’s sad, but true.

12. Is this title part of a series? Without giving us spoilers, of course, what can we expect from the next e-books/books in the series?
Yes, this is the first book in the series. The second book is already completed and I’m working on the final book now with an expected publication date of June 30th. The last book in the series is a continuation of the characters story. They struggle to maintain their relationship while she attends medical school and he teaches at a domestic discipline training center. She decides to attend the program and therein lies the steam and angst.

13. What do you have stored for us in the future? What are you working on/planning on next, aside this title/series?
I would like to finish up my Art of D/s series. The prequel is next on my to-do list after finishing up this series (Continental Affair). After that I’m starting another series called Crimson Kisses with a coauthor,Thomas Duder, a paranormal/erotic piece of fiction. It’s a quartet of books so it’s going to take some serious time, but the first book is (hopefully) due out in Sept. or Oct. Then… maybe, MAYBE, another book in the Art of D/s that includes all the characters from that series and Becoming Sir. I’m also seriously considering doing another off-shoot series from those books about the Dark Asylum, but that’s just a thought.

14. Your situation deviates slightly from other authors being featured in my “Indie Flutters” series. I usually feature self-published authors, but you’ve taken that a step further with your creation, Bondage Bunny Publishing. Can you tell me a bit about that project?
Everything I read about indie publishing stated that a professional look or name would be better received so I decided to come up with my own label. I’ve only recently decided to branch out and take on a few writers (which is still in the works). I love the idea of helping others achieve what I have. Generally, indie publishing isn’t super difficult to get into if you’re not too concerned about what you’re putting out there and, unfortunately, there are far too many people like that, giving indie writers a bad name. There are a lot of little things that I’ve learned along my journey in self publishing and I’d like to share that knowledge and help other aspiring writers.

15. What made you decide to become an Indie Author? What made you take that a step further and create an Indie Label?
I’ve always written stories, but never did anything with them. After reading FSOG, I thought: “I’ve been writing this stuff for years.” I had vaguely heard of indie publishing so I looked into it, did my research, and decided to give it a go. I honestly never thought I could make a career out of it. I just wanted people to read my stories.

16. What would you say was the toughest part?
Getting people to read my work. It’s a never-ending process. Without a big label behind me, I struggle with every book to get it in front of the people I think (and hope) will enjoy it.

17. (As it relates to your book) Did you hire professionals for editing, cover design, formatting?
I have a professional cover designer only.

18. How did you decide who to hire, if you worked with pros?
Since I don’t really work with ‘pros’ per se, except for my cover designer, whom. I found him by sheer luck while doing a Google search, I work with regular people who do beta reading and copy/editing on the side. I found all them, save for one, on Goodreads. I’ve sort of weeded out the beta readers as the years have gone on and I have an amazing group right now.

19. How long did the production part take, from the moment you began working on the manuscript to self-pub to when you hit ‘Publish’?
It’s different for ever book. But in general, a novel will generally take right around three months from beginning stages of writing to editing to formatting. A novella is about 6-8 weeks for the entire process. For this particular novella, I wrote it in a day, had it edited and published within a week. I still don’t know how I did it.

20. Where is your work being distributed, Amazon, B&N, Smashwords, AllRomanceEbooks/ Omnilit, some other distributor? How did you decide which one(s) to go with?
All of the above. I did the research and went with where my books could reach the most people.

21. If you could turn back in time and do things differently, would you? What would you change?
In respect to life, I would not be so sexually reserved in my younger years. In regards to publishing, I wish I had better prepared my first novel. Better editing, formatting, more thought out… I think I’d be doing better right now if I had. Then again, I believe things happen in their own time so…
